3 Essential Tips for Veterans Pursuing College Degrees

Posted on February 9, 2023

Deciding to join the military, air force, or navy is a massive decision. Most people make this choice right out of high school. The military experience teaches them a lot of things, like leadership, discipline, and how to take care of themselves.

However, a lot of people find themselves wanting out of the military in their 20s. But, getting a civilian job and adjusting to civilian life is far from easy for most. That is why, some look into jobs in the security sector, local police, or federal agencies.

But for the ones who really want a regular civilian life, they look into getting a college degree and working a professional job.

If you’re a veteran and you want to pursue higher education, here are three essential tips you can use.

Figure Out Your Interests

The first thing you need to do before joining college is figuring out your interests. This will not only help you pick your major, but also decide the college you should join.

For instance, if you are interested in veterinary sciences, then you will need to find a college with a good veterinary program to help you build a good career.

That’s why it can be important to think about your interests right now. If you’re not sure where to start, try searching for college majors online and seeing if anything sparks.

Besides looking at the subjects in your preferred major, also look into life after getting a degree. For that, you can look into starting salaries, the ease of finding a job, top companies in the field, and other related things.

In-Person, Hybrid, or Online

Once you know what you want to study, you have to think of how you want to study. These days, colleges generally give you three options. These are hybrid, online, or regular in-person classes.

With the hybrid, you get a mix of in-person and online. While every college is different, you might get something like online classes with in-person tests and exams along with access to the campus library.

Online classes are a good fit for someone who wants to study at a university without moving to a different city or giving up a full-time job, among other things. Studying in one of the online colleges for military veterans can be a good way to get back into civilian life without the stress of in-person classes.

Look Into Colleges Offering Military Benefits

When you’re looking into good colleges, you should check if they are offering any benefits for your military service and experience.

Many colleges also offer college credits for active military personnel as well as veterans. These can allow you to get a head start and skip a few months to a couple of years of college.

Every college has representatives that you can contact to get an understanding of the military benefits, financial aid, and anything else you want to know about.

Before contacting them, you can make a list of things you want to ask. During your conversation, you can bring along a notepad and take notes of all the details to make sure you can compare colleges and find the best option for yourself.
